Summer Language Institute

The University of Pittsburgh’s Slavic, East European, and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute has offered intensive summer language courses for over 25 years. With a focus on critical and less commonly taught languages, Pitt’s SLI provides courses in Arabic, Bosnian /Croatian/ Serbian, Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian, Persian (Farsi), Polish, Russian, Slovak, Turkish, and Ukrainian. Whether students choose to study on Pitt’s campus or on one of the SLI’s many abroad programs, they can expect to cover approximately one academic year’s worth of course work during a single summer.

This summer SLI has three $5000 and five $4000 tuition scholarships remaining for students accepted into our Intensive Beginning Turkish course (June 4 – July 28, 2018). The course carries 8 transferable credits and will cover the equivalent of one academic year’s worth of Turkish language instruction. In addition to daily language lessons, students are exposed to culture through classroom activities, singing, films, excursions to local Turkish restaurants, and English-language lectures. There is also funding for the study of Arabic.

Students may apply at link below, and please note: we will continue to accept applications on a rolling basis until the course is full or we have exhausted our scholarship funds. Feel free to contact with any questions.

Language instruction at the SLI emphasizes practical proficiency in the target language as well as cultural competence. In addition to intensive grammar, reading, listening, and, of course, speaking practice, students will attend lectures, films, cooking classes, ethnic picnics, and, for those who go abroad, extensive excursion programs.
