The Association of Middle East Anthropology (AMEA) is hosting an inaugural photo contest to recognize and showcase the incredible work of our scholars. We invite all anthropologists (graduate students, junior and senior faculty, and independent scholars) whose work focuses on the Middle East and North Africa Region to submit up to three photos which best capture their work. Winners of this contest will have their photos showcased on our website (http://www.mideastanthro.com), as well as our social media pages. The winning photos will also be presented at this year’s MESA conference.

We will use the following criteria to evaluate the submission:

the ethnographic and aesthetic quality of the pictures
the extent to which the photos help us see the work and lives of people in the Middle East/North Africa
the overall composition, originality, creativity, and presentation
Photos will be judged by a committee set by the AMEA board, chaired by Peter Habib.

Please submit your photos to submissions@mideastanthro.com by 15 July, 2022. We invite you to submit a brief (50 word max) description of each photo, including a title, the location and date of the photograph, and its ethnographic context. We only accept photographs in JPEG and PNG format.

Please note: Full entry to this contest will be contingent on the completion of a permissions waiver which will be emailed to you following your submission. In submitting to this photo contest—even if you are not chosen as the winner—you are granting AMEA permission to post the photos to our website and social media. You will be given credit for the photo each time it is published by us, and the copyright will remain with you.
