Video Description:

In September of 2019, ACMCU presented a book talk featuring Dr. Mohammad Hassan Khalil entitled, "Islam and the New Atheism." This video showcases that presentation in full with synchronized closed captions. In this event video, Dr. Khalil examines the impact of the so-called New Atheists on Western (and to some extent non-Western) intellectual discourse. Dr. Khalil also examines how New Atheist views on Islam in particular have shaped the ways that many college professors and students (typically outside Islamic studies) imagine the world’s second largest religion. His talk focuses on the work of authors Sam Harris, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and Richard Dawkins in particular.

Featured Speaker:

Dr. Mohammad Hassan Khalil is Professor of Religious Studies, Adjunct Professor of Law, and Director of the Muslim Studies Program at Michigan State University. Before returning to his hometown of East Lansing, Michigan, he was Assistant Professor of Religion and Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Illinois. He specializes in Islamic thought and is the author of Islam and the Fate of Others: The Salvation Question (Oxford University Press, 2012) and Jihad, Radicalism, and the New Atheism (Cambridge University Press, 2018). He is also the editor of Between Heaven and Hell: Islam, Salvation, and the Fate of Others (Oxford University Press, 2013) and Muslims and US Politics Today: A Defining Moment (ILEX and Harvard University Press, 2019). Dr. Khalil has presented papers at various national and international conferences, and has published peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on various topics, from early Islamic historiography to bioethics.
