Description: Dr. Carter Malkasian was the Special Assistant for Strategy to Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford from 2015 to 2019. He has extensive experience working in conflict zones. He spent nearly two years in Garmser district, Helmand province, Afghanistan, as a State Department political officer. His 2013 book, “War Comes to Garmser: Thirty Years of Conflict on the Afghan Frontier” (Oxford UP), won the 2014 silver medal for the Council on Foreign Relations’ Arthur Ross Book Award.

Rasul Miller is a PhD candidate and a William Fontaine fellow of Africana Studies and History at the University of Pennsylvania. Rasul received his BA in Economics and African and African American Studies from Duke University. His research interests include Muslim movements in 20th century America and their relationship to Black internationalist thought and West African intellectual history. He serves as editor and contributing writer for the history section of Sapelo Square, an award winning online platform dedicated to the experiences of Black Muslims.

You are invited to attend the Third Islamic Awareness Day at IUP on Tuesday, April 14th 2015. The theme of this year's event is "The Message of Peace." Main stage activities will include a Quran recitation and various discussions led by IUP faculty and students, as well as an open Q&A session with the audience. Other activities, including a try-the-Hijab booth, will take place alongside the event. The event will conclude with dinner for all and childcare will be provided for any who might need it.
