Announced by the University of Pittsburgh:

CCAS is hosting Dr. Mona El-Ghobashy, author of the critically acclaimed book Bread and Freedom: Egypt’s Revolutionary Situation (Stanford University Press) and Dr. Atef Said, author of the forthcoming book Revolution Squared: Tahrir, Political Possibilities and Counter-Revolution in Egypt (Duke University Press). This event is hybrid and will be held in person at the Intercultural Center (ICC) CCAS Boardroom and on Zoom. Register here.

Though a decade has passed since Egypt’s 2011 revolution, many pressing questions still linger regarding the nature of this popular uprising, the democratic experiment it brought about, and the military counterrevolution that tragically rolled it back. In this event, two prominent scholars of Egypt, each with recent or forthcoming books on the revolution and counterrevolution, will share their insights on this pivotal moment in Egypt’s history.

About the authors:
Dr. Mona El-Ghobashy is a Clinical Associate Professor in Liberal Studies at New York University, where she teaches courses on democratization, revolution, Middle East history and politics, and seminars on the craft of research.

Dr. Atef Said is an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His research engages with the fields of sociological theory, political sociology, historical sociology, and sociology of the Middle East.
