K-12 Teacher Workshop: Afghan History, Culture, and the Young Refugee Experience

The United States is receiving an influx of at least 51,000 Afghan refugees, including many families with school-aged children who have been through a traumatic experience. Our schools need to be ready. K-12 teachers from all over the United States are invited to a workshop to learn about Afghanistan and the refugee experience from an Afghan
student’s perspective. Professor Shah Mahmoud Hanifi of James Madison University will talk about Afghan history; Atifa Rawan, librarian emerita at the University of Arizona will explain some aspects of Afghan culture, and undergraduate student Malika Akbary will talk about her experiences coming to Tucson as a child refugee, and matriculating into the local school system.
