The Consortium for Christian–Muslim Dialogue and the City of Bridges Foundation will co-host an interfaith dialogue with an expert on Islamic studies at an event entitled Prophet Muhammad’s Relations with Christians & What They Mean Today.
This mini-symposium features speakers Lauren O’Donnell (Duquesne University School of Pharmacy) and Michael Jensen-Seaman (Duquesne University Department of Biology) with panelists Michael Deem (University of Pittsburgh Center for Bioethics and Health Law), Rabbi Seth Adelson (Congregation Beth Shalom, Pittsburgh), and Imam Chris Caras (Islamic Center of Pittsburgh). Fifteen independent states emerged out of the rubble of the Soviet Union. Yet, our dominant narrative of collapse—perestroika to the August coup—primarily focuses on events in Moscow. And that story tends to be one of democratization and liberalization. But what of peripheral republics like Tajikistan? How were Gorbachev’s reforms implemented far from the center? How did they shape Tajikistan’s final years as a Soviet republic and its initial years as an independent state?

Professor Aziz is the author of the groundbreaking book The Racial Muslim: When Racism Quashes Religious Freedom. In her groundbreaking book, Professor Aziz explores this paradox: how could a religious minority be so overtly discriminated against in a country that privileges religious freedom legally and normatively? The answers illuminate the racial contours of religious freedom in American law and society. She is Professor of Law and Chancellor's Social Justice Scholar, Rutgers University School of Law.
