Islamic Pyrography

Umar Abdul-Ghaffar is a local Muslim artist who creates one-of-a-kind pyrography art with an Islamic message. Pyrography literally means "fire writing" in the original Greek. A collection of both functional and decorative items works will be on view at the Community Gallery. Join us to celebrate an Islamic twist on the art of decorating wood with a painted metal tool and heat!

The symposium commemorates Carnegie Museum of Natural History's reinterpretation and reinstallation of the popular diorama long known as "Arab Courier Attacked by Lions" and now named "Lion Attacking a Dromedary" during the 150-year anniversary of its original display at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle.

The symbol known as the Hamsa, or Hand of Fatima, in Arab and Middle Eastern culture, is also a potent symbol in cultures around the world, from Asia, Africa, Latin America and even to the tribal cultures of Native Americans. This exhibition will explore the origins, symbolism and interpretations of this potent design with objects from all these cultures, with examples and an audience-interactive lecture.

The Christian-Muslim Dialogue Committee (CMDC) is sponsoring an exhibition of Islamic art featuring Pittsburgh-based artists in the Les Idees Gallery on the third floor of the Union.

The exhibit, which will run from Thursday, Sept. 4, through Tuesday, Sept. 30, supports the CMDC’s mission to provide a platform for multiple perspectives between Christians and Muslims, and to promote healthy and peaceful relationships.
