This year's Global Issues Through Literature series, a reading group designed for K-12 educators to learn and use new texts in the classroom, will travel the world through the eyes of authors writing under authoritarianism to try to understand the role of literature as document, commentator, and critic of restrictive regimes.

Deepa Kumar is an Associate Professor of Media Studies at Rutgers University and President, Rutgers AAUP-AFT faculty union. She is a leading scholar in communication, prominent public intellectual, and champion of the humanities on the national stage. The title of her lecture, “Constructing the Terrorist Threat: Islamophobia, the Media, and the War on Terror,” stems from her 2017 Media Education Foundation video, designed to support pedagogical efforts to teach critically about media discourse on Muslims.

Samyukta: A Journal of Gender & Culture is glad to announce a different kind of Call For Papers for an academic journal which has so far been engaged in bringing forth analytical pieces of critical thought pertaining to Gender and Cultural Studies. This unique call evolved from the deliberations and discussions generated by the previous issue of the journal which was on Islamic Feminism (January –-2017 Vol. XVII No.1) guest edited by the distinguished scholar, Prof. Margot Badran.

The field has been enriched and challenged by this rapid expansion. Each contributor to the field has set out to provide a working definition for Islamophobia, selection of an academic and research methodology and collecting relevant data to qualify their thesis.

He joined the School of International Affairs at Penn State University after a 28-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service. His experience and expertise focus on international relations, foreign aid administration, and American foreign policy. Charles Kurzman is a professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and co-director of the Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations. He is a leading scholar of the Middle Eastern region and Arab world, Islam, revolutions, and comparative and historical
